316 stainless is the spec for saltwater dock hardware — 304 will stain and pit within a couple seasons. Check that you're through-bolting into a solid backing plate, not just into fiberglass. A cleat ripped out at a dock in a storm is a serious safety issue. These 8-inch cleats handle lines up to 3/4" diameter comfortably.
