If you're not wearing your PFD, an inflatable doesn't help you. But inflatables remove the excuse for not wearing it — they're actually comfortable. The Mustang MD3183 is what I wear on my own boat offshore. The hydrostatic inflator fires at 4" depth, so it won't trigger in spray. Inspect the CO2 cylinder and arming mechanism every season. A $20 rearming kit is way cheaper than replacing the jacket.
