USCG requirement, not optional. You need at least one for any enclosed engine compartment, and I always recommend two — one in the cabin, one in the cockpit. Check the pressure gauge monthly; if the needle drifts out of the green zone, replace it. These are B-I rated which meets the requirement for most recreational boats. Replace every 12 years regardless of gauge reading.
